Winning Teams

Last year, the Global Green Growth Institute, Student energy and the Youth Climate Lab partnered up to design and deliver a new initiative: Greenpreneurs. Greenpreneurs was delivered as four-month global business accelerator and competition open to youth from developing and emerging economies. Youth teams submitted their business proposals for solutions that positively impact the future of sustainable energy; water and sanitation; sustainable landscapes; and green city development.

The selected ten teams were taken through a 10-week entrepreneurship program to support their development of a viable business plan, and compete for small-scale seed funding and conference bursaries. There were over 350 applications to participate from over forty countries, and the winning three teams traveled to Seoul, South Korea to receive their award from former UN SecretaryGeneral Ban-Ki Moon.

Shape healthy, resilient, and sustainable places through living green infrastructure

Theme: Green City Development

Team Members: Sirey Sum, Aaron Sexton, Hinson Oudom

Based in Phnom Penh city - Cambodia, CGI will work with the local city to address stormwater and urban green space issues in the capital city. In order to maximize our impact, we intend to extend our services into other important economic growth areas, including: Ta Khmau, Kampot, Kep, and Siem Reap.

CGI will provide architectural and landscape design services in streetscape and bioretention systems to respond to the need for greater awareness and resources to promote design, installation, and maintenance of green infrastructure in local communities.



Natural pesticide with enhanced rainfastness

Our idea seeks to develop natural pesticide with enhanced rainfastness whose raw materials come from local natural resources in Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We formulate our pesticide by combining eugenol and citral from clove and lemongrass oil which are available in abundant number and commonly produced within Indonesian farms. Using combination of these essential oils is done in order to increase the effectiveness and scope of a natural pesticide. However, the effectiveness of eugenol and citral is also known to decrease by the time due to its volatility. Thus, entrapment using chitosan which is produced from crustacean shell waste is done to overcome this problem. The use of chitosan as our matrix is reported to save spray volume of pesticide up to 45%. Besides the three materials mentioned previously, we also utilize saponin from tea seeds waste as adjuvant to increase the rainfastness of natural pesticide. Saponin is chosen due to its structure which makes it become amphiphilic and surface-active compound. Our natural pesticide with enhanced rainfastness then will be run and produced by Samigaluh village-owned enterprise. Utilization of village-owned enterprise is done to suit with our business ideas’ purposes which is to empower rural economy and decrease the economic inequality happened in Indonesia. Besides, the extraction of clove and lemongrass oil is a common production within Samigaluh farmers, so the development of our business idea will be easier to be run and produced by them.



Solar and clean biomass cooking technologies

Eco-Africa cooks Clean is an venture that looks at combining of Solar and clean Biomass cooking technologies to provide a very affordable and clean source of cooking fuel in institutions like schools, universities, prisons and hospitals in Uganda and Zimbabwe. For a long time now firewood has been the cheapest source of cooking fuel and was widely adopted despite its negative impact to the environment. Alternative cooking technologies such as solar cookers, biogas cookers and fuel briquettes exist but these have not been affordable for institution to set up and maintain. Fuel briquettes have the most potential to be an affordable alternative source of cooking energy in institutional kitchens but there adaptation in the institutional kitchens has been hindered by the lack of stove technology . These fuel briquettes are a form of cooking charcoal that is produced from carbonizing, crushing and compressing of Organic agricultural waste from farms, food markets and house hold.

Eco-friendly paving stones

We’ve developed a new formula based on 80% of plastic waste and other additives that can replace and be used in place of such materials as concrete. Our startup’s first product is “PAVECO” - an eco-friendly paving stones. They can be used in all the same ways as regular products in sidewalks, gardens and more, but

  • use less energy and water in production;

  • are cheaper to produce;

  • offer better insulation and are more durable than most alternatives.

Our production process start by collecting plastic waste from NGO’s, farmers and other suppliers also the raw material. We then put the formula in special machines that transform the materials into a mixture ready to be moulded into different shapes and different colours.
